Oscar Stats: Nominated for Best Actor (Joaquin Phoenix), Best Supporting Actor (Phillip Seymour Hoffman), Best Supporting Actress (Amy Adams).
Verdict: More cloudy than a urine filled swimming pool, The Master is a pretentious and confusing product of a director who has made this brand of almost unpalatable film his calling card. That being said, the film acts as a stage for phenomenal performances from Hoffman and Adams, and a disturbing, believable, but rather one-dimensional Phoenix.

Oscar Stats: Nominated Best Actor (Denzel Washington), Best Original Screenplay (John Gatins) (2 total).
Verdict: Well-written and original, with a strange message about God and addiction. Washington does well enough to merit a view, but overall, the film and the dynamic main character crash and burn with a cliche ending.

Verdict: Far too alternative for a Best Picture winner, though Tarantino should take home his regular award for incredible writing, and Mr. Waltz may very well secure his second supporting actor Oscar in five years.
